Why it matters beyond tidiness
Concrete dust is crystalline silica, and it is a regulated respiratory hazard rather than an inconvenience. WorkSafeBC has specific requirements for controlling it. A contractor grinding dry with no extraction is creating a health risk for their own crew as well as a mess in your building.
How extraction works
The grinder shroud is sealed to the floor and connected to a HEPA vacuum that pulls dust off the cutting surface as it is produced. Very little escapes into the room. Combined with pre-separators that stop the filters loading up, a properly set up system captures the overwhelming majority of what is generated.
Interior and occupied spaces
Basements, commercial interiors and anywhere connected to living space get poly containment walls and negative air machines, so that whatever does escape stays inside the work zone and is filtered before it leaves. Return air vents in the work area get sealed so the building HVAC does not distribute dust through the rest of the house.
What to expect afterwards
A light film on horizontal surfaces immediately adjacent to the work area is realistic even with good containment, and we clean it. Finding dust on furniture two rooms away is not normal and means the containment was inadequate.
