The thermal shock problem it solves
Resin films and concrete expand at different rates. Pour near-boiling water across a coated slab that was at cellar temperature a moment before and the film tries to grow faster than the concrete holding it, which loads the bond line until it shears. One event does nothing; a daily sanitation cycle does it in a couple of seasons. Urethane cement sidesteps the problem by matching the movement of the slab instead of fighting it.
Where it is the only right answer
Brew houses, dairy processing, blanching and cook lines, commercial kitchens that steam-clean, any floor whose sanitation protocol involves genuinely hot water. In those rooms urethane cement is not a premium option, it is the only system whose failure mode is not built into the cleaning schedule.
What it is not for
It is a utilitarian product: matte, limited colours, built for wash-down rather than looks. In garages, showrooms and retail, where thermal shock does not exist, flake, metallic or polished systems look better and cost less. Specifying urethane cement where it is not needed is the commercial version of over-buying.
How it installs
Prep runs coarser than decorative work, CSP 4-5, because the trowelled mass needs a heavy mechanical key. The material goes down by trowel or screed, usually broadcast with quartz for slip texture, coved at the walls, and detailed into drains. Most installations return to service in 24 to 48 hours, which suits phased work in operating facilities.
