Choose flake when
It is a garage, shop, basement or any floor that gets real use. Over a fifteen-year life the dirt-hiding, the lasting grip and the invisible repairs are worth far more than the thousand dollars they cost, and almost every homeowner who chooses solid colour to save money regrets it within a year.
Choose solid colour when
An exact colour is required, as in a showroom matching a brand palette. Or where safety zoning genuinely needs to be legible: hatched hazard areas, traffic lanes, equipment footprints. Or in a wash-down area where the smoothest possible surface cleans best and slip resistance is handled by a specified additive.
Watch for partial broadcast
The real trap is not flake versus solid, it is full broadcast versus partial. A partial broadcast covers 40-60% so the base colour shows between chips, uses about a third of the material, and is what most cheap "flake" quotes are pricing. Ask which one you are being quoted, in writing.
