Dry is fine, wet is the problem
A cured resin floor is not slippery dry. Most people are surprised how much grip a gloss coating has underfoot in normal conditions, and slip testing generally bears that out. Introduce water and it changes completely: a smooth hard surface with a film of water on it offers very little for a shoe or a bare foot to key into. Every slip incident we have heard about on a coated floor involved water, snow melt or a spill.
How the additive works
A fine aggregate, usually aluminium oxide or a polymer bead, is broadcast into the wet topcoat so that microscopic peaks stand above the film. Water has somewhere to go rather than forming a continuous slick, and the peaks give a shoe or a foot something to bite. Grade matters: a fine bead for a residential entry that stays comfortable barefoot, a coarser aggregate for a commercial kitchen worked in boots.
What you give up
Gloss, slightly, and cleanability, slightly. An anti-slip floor reads as satin rather than mirror, which on a metallic floor is a real aesthetic decision worth seeing on a sample before committing. Heavier textures also hold soil more, so they need a deck brush or a scrubber rather than a mop. That trade is worth making everywhere it is a safety question and not worth making in a dry room where it is not.
Where we add it as standard
Lakefront and waterfront rooms, any entry from outside, bathrooms and wet rooms, pool decks and change rooms, commercial kitchens and production floors, and any public-facing commercial entry. On residential metallic in a dry interior room we ask rather than assume, because it changes the look. If a quote for a wet area does not mention slip resistance at all, that is a question worth asking before signing it.
