What actually determines lifespan
Preparation and moisture, far more than product. A well-specified coating over an unground or wet slab fails in year two regardless of what is in the pail. A mid-range product over a properly ground, moisture-tested and repaired slab lasts decades. The variable that matters is under the coating.
The topcoat wears first
The decorative layer, flake or metallic, is protected by the topcoat above it. As the topcoat abrades in traffic lanes, the sensible move is re-coating before it wears through to the decorative layer. That is a one-day job of light abrasion, clean and two coats. Waiting until the flake itself is exposed turns it into a rebuild.
What shortens it
Parking before full cure, dragging heavy items with sharp feet, sustained solvent pooling, and aggressive cleaners. Citrus and vinegar-based products dull a polyaspartic topcoat over time; a pH-neutral cleaner and a walk-off mat at the door do more for longevity than any product upgrade.
What a warranty covers
Workmanship warranties cover delamination and adhesion failure, which are the things a contractor controls. They do not cover impact damage, abrasion, or damage from using the floor before it cured. Get the term in writing alongside the manufacturer product warranty so you have both documented.
