Polyaspartic is a fast-cure, UV-stable cousin of polyurethane, and it changed what a floor coating schedule looks like. A full polyaspartic build goes down in one day instead of two or three, cures in cold that would stall epoxy, and never ambers in sunlight. Why It Cures So Fast
Polyaspartic is an aliphatic polyurea with a deliberately slowed reaction. The set time is adjustable at the pail. We can tune it from a fifteen-minute pot life for cold weather to over an hour for a large floor on a hot day. That control is why a whole floor can be ground, based, flaked and topcoated between breakfast and dinner.
UV Stability Is the Real Advantage
Standard epoxy is aromatic, which means UV breaks it down and turns clear coats yellow. Anywhere sun lands regularly. A garage with the door open all summer, a sunroom, a covered patio, a showroom with south glazing. A straight epoxy topcoat ambers within a couple of seasons. Polyaspartic does not. Every system we install finishes in polyaspartic for exactly this reason.
Cold-Weather Installation
Epoxy effectively stops curing around 10°C. Polyaspartic keeps going down to about 0°C, which in the Okanagan means we can keep coating heated garages, basements and commercial interiors through the winter instead of quoting you into a spring waitlist.
The Honest Trade-Off
Polyaspartic goes down thinner than epoxy per coat and costs substantially more per gallon, so a 100% polyaspartic floor lands $2-$3 per square foot above the epoxy-base equivalent. It also gives the crew far less working time. A slow installer will leave lap marks. If your schedule allows two days, an epoxy base under a polyaspartic topcoat gives you more build for less money.

What is the difference between epoxy and polyaspartic?
Epoxy is thick, builds well, bonds hard and cures slowly, but it ambers in UV. Polyaspartic is thinner per coat, cures in hours, stays clear in sunlight and installs in cold weather, but costs 30-40% more. The strongest systems use epoxy as the base and polyaspartic as the topcoat.
Can a garage floor really be done in one day?
Yes, with a full polyaspartic build. We grind in the morning, base coat and broadcast flake by midday, and topcoat in the afternoon. You can walk on it that evening and park on it 24 hours later. It costs about $2-$3 per square foot more than the two-day epoxy-base version.
Does polyaspartic yellow?
No. Polyaspartic is aliphatic, meaning it is UV-stable by chemistry rather than by additive. That is why it is the only topcoat we use on floors with sun exposure, garages with the door open, sunrooms, covered patios and glazed showrooms.
Is polyaspartic worth the extra cost?
It is when downtime, cold weather or sunlight are in play. If the garage has to be usable tomorrow, if it is January, or if the floor gets direct sun, polyaspartic pays for itself. If none of those apply, an epoxy base with a polyaspartic topcoat gives you the same finished performance for less.
