Mechanical texture versus additives
This is the distinction that matters. A flake or quartz floor gets grip from the physical profile of aggregate beneath the topcoat, so it keeps that grip as the surface wears. A smooth floor gets grip from grit suspended in the very top layer, which abrades away exactly as the floor ages. For anywhere consequences matter, choose broadcast.
Tuning it to the room
Grip is not a single setting. A commercial kitchen needs heavy texture at the line and dish pit where the floor is wet and greasy, and something smoother in prep areas where cleanability matters more. A pool deck needs aggregate that grips wet bare feet without being uncomfortable, which is a narrower window than people expect.
Where we add it as standard
Entries, ramps, stair landings, garages where wet shoes and meltwater arrive, and any commercial wet area. We do not charge separately for anti-slip additive; it goes in wherever the space needs it, because a floor somebody slips on is a failed project regardless of how it looks.
The gloss trade-off
Anti-slip additive knocks the gloss back slightly, and heavier texture is marginally harder to clean. Both are worth it. A mirror-finish metallic floor in an entryway looks spectacular in photographs and is a genuine hazard in a Kelowna February.
