PATIO & POOL DECK COATING KELOWNA
Exterior concrete is the hardest environment we coat. Direct UV all summer, freeze-thaw all winter, standing water, pool chemicals and sunscreen. It is entirely doable, but it is a different specification from an interior floor and anyone quoting you a standard epoxy for it is going to leave you with a yellow, chalking deck in two seasons.

What actually matters here
UV Stability Is Non-Negotiable
Standard epoxy is aromatic and breaks down under ultraviolet light. It ambers, then chalks, then loses gloss unevenly. On an interior floor that only matters near a window. On a south-facing Okanagan patio it is visible in one summer. Every exterior system we install is topcoated in aliphatic polyaspartic for this reason alone.
Freeze-Thaw and Slab Movement
Exterior slabs move far more than interior ones, thermal expansion in July, contraction in January, and frost heave underneath. The coating has to flex with that, which means a more flexible resin and honouring the existing control joints rather than filling them flush. A rigid coating over a moving exterior slab cracks along the same lines the slab does.
Wet-Area Slip Resistance
A pool deck is wet with bare feet on it, which is the highest-consequence slip environment we work in. Texture comes from a broadcast, flake or fine aggregate, rather than from an additive in the topcoat, so grip does not fade with wear. We tune the aggregate so it grips wet without being uncomfortable barefoot.
Heat Underfoot
Dark colours on a south-facing deck get genuinely too hot for bare feet in an Okanagan July. Lighter blends and mid-tone greys stay usable. This is one of the few times we will push back hard on a colour choice, because a beautiful dark deck that nobody can stand on is a failed project.

Can you epoxy an outdoor patio?
Not with standard epoxy. It ambers and chalks in UV within a season or two. Exterior concrete needs a UV-stable polyaspartic system with a broadcast texture, installed to flex with freeze-thaw movement. That runs $9-$14 per square foot in the Kelowna area.
What is the best pool deck coating?
A textured broadcast system sealed with UV-stable polyaspartic. The texture comes from broadcast flake or fine aggregate so slip resistance does not fade as the topcoat wears, and the polyaspartic handles sun, pool chemicals and freeze-thaw without yellowing.
Will an exterior coating crack in winter?
Not if it is specified for exterior use and the existing control joints are honoured rather than filled flush. Exterior slabs move seasonally, so the system uses a more flexible resin and lets the joints do their job. Rigid interior-grade coatings applied outdoors crack along the slab lines within a couple of winters.
