The honest answer is that this is the wrong question. The best systems use epoxy as the base and polyaspartic as the topcoat, here is why.
They Are Not Competitors
Most articles frame this as a choice, which is how it gets sold rather than how it gets installed. In practice a premium garage floor is an epoxy base coat with a polyaspartic topcoat, because each resin does something the other does badly. Understanding what each one is actually for makes it obvious why.
What Epoxy Does Well
Epoxy is thick. A 100% solids epoxy base coat builds real film thickness in one pass, fills minor surface imperfections, and bonds extremely hard to a diamond-ground slab. It is also relatively forgiving to apply. The pot life gives a crew time to keep a wet edge across a big floor. As a base coat it is close to ideal.
What Epoxy Does Badly
Epoxy is aromatic, which is chemistry-speak for "ultraviolet light destroys it". A clear epoxy topcoat exposed to sun ambers, then chalks, then loses gloss unevenly. In an Okanagan garage with the door open all summer, that shows within two seasons. Epoxy also cures slowly, full cure can take the better part of a week, and effectively stops curing below about 10°C.
What Polyaspartic Does Well
Polyaspartic is an aliphatic polyurea, which means it is UV-stable by chemistry rather than by additive. It never yellows. It cures in hours instead of days, so a floor can be recoated the same afternoon. It stays flexible enough to tolerate slab movement, and it will cure down to roughly 0°C, which keeps installs running through an Okanagan winter.
What Polyaspartic Does Badly
It costs substantially more per gallon and goes down thinner per coat, so building comparable thickness takes more product and more money. It also gives a crew far less working time, with a short pot life, a slow or inexperienced installer will leave lap marks that cannot be fixed after the fact. It is an unforgiving product in the wrong hands.
When to Use 100% Polyaspartic
Three situations justify skipping the epoxy base entirely: you need the space back in a single day, it is too cold for epoxy to cure, or the floor is outdoors where nothing aromatic belongs. A full polyaspartic build costs about $2-$3 per square foot more than the epoxy-base equivalent, which is money well spent in any of those three cases and wasted otherwise.
