Flake, chip, broadcast, whatever your last contractor called it, is the workhorse of the coating world. Vinyl chips thrown into a wet resin base build a textured, mechanically keyed surface that hides dust, resists slipping, and takes abuse for two decades. It is what we install more than anything else, and for most floors it is the right answer.

Full Broadcast vs. Partial Broadcast
A partial broadcast scatters flake to maybe 40-60% coverage so the base colour shows between chips. It uses roughly a third of the material and is what most budget quotes are actually pricing. A full broadcast keeps throwing chip until the surface will not take any more, then gets scraped back flat. It costs more up front and it is the only version that still looks right in year ten.
Reading a Flake Blend
Blends are named for their mix. A domino blend of black, white and grey reads neutral and industrial; earth-tone blends with tan and copper warm up a basement; a heavy contrast blend hides dirt best. Larger 1/4" chip gives a bolder, more textural floor; 1/8" reads tighter and more refined. We bring physical samples so you are not choosing off a screen.
Grip Without Grit
Because the chip texture is mechanical rather than a coating additive, a flake floor keeps its slip resistance as the topcoat wears. That is a real advantage over a smooth solid-colour floor with grit mixed into the final coat, where grip fades with the topcoat. For entries, ramps and anywhere wet shoes land, flake is the safer floor.
Repairs Are Nearly Invisible
If a flake floor gets gouged, the repair blends. We grind the damaged area, re-base, hand-broadcast matching chip and re-coat the section. Because the pattern is random, the patch disappears. Solid colour and metallic floors cannot be spot-repaired the same way, which matters over a twenty-year life.

What is a full-broadcast flake floor?
Full broadcast means vinyl chip is thrown into the wet epoxy base until the floor physically rejects more flake, typically 100% coverage at roughly 0.5-0.8 lbs per square foot. The excess is scraped and vacuumed the next day, then sealed. Partial broadcast systems use about a third of the flake and show their age far sooner.
How much does a flake epoxy floor cost?
Flake systems run $8-$12 per square foot installed in the Kelowna area, including diamond grinding, crack repair, epoxy base, full chip broadcast and two coats of polyaspartic. Floors over 1,500 sq ft typically come down to $7-$9 per square foot.
Does flake flooring hide dirt?
Better than any other coated finish. The multi-colour chip and slight texture break up the visual field, so dust, tire marks and footprints do not read the way they do on a solid or metallic floor. A mid-contrast grey blend is the best-hiding option we install.
Is a flake floor hard to clean?
No. The texture is at the topcoat surface, not open pores, so it sweeps and mops like any sealed floor. A microfibre mop with a neutral cleaner is all it takes. Avoid citrus and vinegar-based cleaners, which dull the polyaspartic over time.
