What actually matters here
Point Loads and Impact
Jack stands, engine hoists, machine feet and dropped tools deliver concentrated loads that will chip a thin decorative coating. Shop floors get a heavier build, more base coat, a full flake broadcast for cushioning texture, and two topcoat passes. Where there is real equipment traffic we move to a solid industrial system at 40+ mils.
Chemical Exposure
Brake cleaner, gasoline, hydraulic oil, battery acid and lacquer thinner all land on a shop floor eventually. Polyaspartic topcoats handle all of them with reasonable cleanup time. Where solvents sit for long periods. A parts washer bay, a mixing area. We spec a novolac topcoat in that zone specifically.
Welding and Hot Work
No resin coating survives direct welding spatter. If you weld regularly, plan a designated hot-work bay with a steel plate or leave that section as bare ground concrete. We can terminate the coating cleanly at a saw-cut line so the transition looks deliberate rather than like a mistake.
Unheated Detached Shops
Most detached Okanagan shops have no heat, which puts them out of epoxy range from roughly November to March. Options are scheduling in season, running temporary heat to hold the slab above product minimum through the cure window, or using a polyaspartic system rated to about 0°C.

What is the best floor coating for a workshop?
A full-flake epoxy at 30-40 mils with a polyaspartic topcoat, at $8-$12 per square foot. It handles dropped tools and solvents, hides sawdust and metal filings, and spot-repairs invisibly when something does chip it. For forklift or heavy equipment traffic, step up to a solid industrial build.
Will epoxy handle oil and gas spills?
Yes, with a polyaspartic topcoat. Petroleum products, brake cleaner and hydraulic fluid wipe off with no staining if cleaned within a reasonable time. For areas where solvents pool or sit, parts washers, mixing benches. We specify a novolac topcoat in that zone.
Can you coat an unheated shop in winter?
With polyaspartic, down to about 0°C slab temperature. Below that, or for an epoxy-base system, we either bring in temporary heat and hold the slab above the product minimum through the full cure window, or schedule the job between April and October.
